When compared to the original storyline of the Shakespearean play which debuted live on stage approximately four hundred years prior, fans have noted the many changes that were applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more contemporary production based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original plot revolves around the tragedy that occurs because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic ending and instead chooses a more positive outlook by embracing on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such traumatic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who head to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s story and changes the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while introducing new and equally strong women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent years, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the show. Even the dresses worn by the musical’s characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the ongoing show and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan costumes and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
