William Shakespeare's love story has long been known as one of the most despairing plays in several decades, with the main protagonists' passionate infatuation for one another leading to their choice to commit suicide. Using Shakespeare and his wife as tools in the play itself however, West End's brand-new musical, & Juliet, places in a new twist by allowing Juliet to change her own fate in Romeo's suicide and giving her a chance to redefine herself. Choosing to find new experiences with her equally-committed companions, they are all introduced to a new landscape beyond what they were ready for when they arrive in Paris, France.

Having been produced four centuries after the original, the musical also chose to apply implementation that is more appropriate today. To present its message across to the theatergoers, the musical uses a set of numbers borrowed from current music’s chart-topper producer, Max Martin. The Swedish producer earlier on had intentions of creating a musical around all his songs over his career, giving rise to ‘& Juliet’ being created and later on premiering in the year 2019. Martin gave complete freedom in the renditions of his songs to the musical, saying that he “hoped to revive his songs over the years in a new way, and to have fans feel that even if it is a very different medium for his usual work, the audience should enjoy his music just as much.” The ongoing musical ended up including tracks from chart-topping performers such as Jessie J, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, and Justin Timberlake, among others. Due to its modern score, the musical was one of the first to gather a new audience to West End.
