The original Romeo & Juliet, debuted live around forty decades ago. When compared to that first performance, viewers have noted that some modifications have been implemented, and it's now called ‘& Juliet’. This production is significantly more contemporary, based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original plot is centered around the tragic tale of the unbridled passion of two lovers and of rash decision-making, resulting in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. However, the tale of ‘& Juliet’ takes us beyond the said tragic tale and instead, chooses a more positive outlook, by focusing on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new show’s cast of characters. Juliet and her team of friends travel to Paris and embrace their identities, not as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist perspective, as seen through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway. Anne soon takes command of her husband’s tale and changes the ending of his popular classic. She modifies both old characters from the original story, while inviting new and equally strong women to the story. Going off-script, from the dull original, the production incorporates contemporary culture, specific songs from recent generations, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the production. Even the costumes worn by the play’s characters, give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the new production and the previous classic, by contrasting Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out, and strives to celebrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
