Set side by side with the original known story of Romeo & Juliet which debuted live roughly four centuries ago, critics have distinguished the considerable alterations that were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer show based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original drama centers around the tragic ending that comes about because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic events and instead chooses a more positive outlook by embracing on the endless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her clique of friends, who journey to Paris to discover their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist flip through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes hold of her husband’s tale and alters the ending of his popular classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while introducing new and equally strong women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent years, that reflect the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the show. Even the dresses worn by the show’s leading cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while highlighting the contrast between the new musical and the previous classic by using Elizabethan dresses and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
