Four decades ago, a star show was born when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel created the very first stage screenplay for the stage adaptation, Les Misérables (previously in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the matching title, Les Misérables was adapted and turned into a theater play as a fully sung-through show, which was monumental in that decade.

After a very short run in Paris, there was already a growing demand to produce an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he instantly fell in love and agreed to create an English version while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the new song numbers. The English staging of Les Misérables at first premiered with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but due to its astounding success and repeatedly sold-out shows, the musical rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, a significantly more superior theater, and was performed for 19 years. The musical then transferred once again to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. Adding together all its tours since its creation four decades ago, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running stage play in the entire world.

With almost 4 decades in London's West End solely and not even enumerating its shows in foreign locations, including its well-received Broadway seasons, it is with certainty that Les Misérables endures and is impressive in the viewpoint of the show's fanbase. The plot and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the revealed emotion behind each song and act presented. The musical has become so successful that the play has been converted to movies repeatedly and gained loyal fanbases even on another medium.

This approaching June’s run of Les Misérables brings it to District Of Columbia, where the show will be running on Wednesday 11th June 2025, in Kennedy Center Opera House, Washington. For fully lyricized show like Les Misérables, fans can agree that Kennedy Center Opera House is the premier venue because of its sound engineering and acoustics, in addition to a spacious constructed stage to hold the play.
