When compared to the original plot of Romeo & Juliet which debuted live approximately forty decades prior, viewers have discerned the stark modifications that were applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original premise revolves around the tragedy that occurs because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead pursues a more positive outlook by concentrating on the boundless possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who head to Paris and discover their identities not just as individuals, but as strong women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s story and alters the ending of his famous classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while bringing in new and equally capable women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the musical. Even the costumes worn by the musical’s leading characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while conveying the contrast between the new show and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s dress styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This December’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it arrive in District Of Columbia, where Kennedy Center Opera House of Washington is proud to feature this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Thursday 19th December 2024.
