More than 40 years ago, history was being made when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel wrote the original musical script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s late book of the matching name, Les Mis was transformed and turned into a live stage adaptation as a show only sung from start to finish, which was monumental in that time period.

After a limited season performed in French in France, there was already great clamor to produce an English adaptation, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he instantly fell in love and decided to create an English version in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who wrote the English songs. The English production of Les Mis only premiered with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its astounding success and larger audience with the English version, the musical quickly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a significantly more superior theater, and ran for 19 years. The musical then transferred one more time to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until present day. Counting all its tours since its inception in 1980, Les Mis is actually the longest-running musical in the entire world.

With almost 4 decades in London on its own and not even enumerating its tours in other countries, especially its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is undeniable that Les Misérables perseveres and is spectacular in the viewpoint of the play's fanbase. The plot and the rich and touching soundtrack, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings because of the evident emotion beneath the surface of each character and act presented. The musical has become so successful that the show has been converted to motion pictures several times and gained loyal fanbases even on a separate platform.

This upcoming June’s run of Les Mis carries it to District Of Columbia, where the show will be running on Friday 27th June 2025, in Kennedy Center Opera House, Washington. For a sung-through musical like Les Mis, locals all attest to how Kennedy Center Opera House is the premier option thanks to its audio engineering and acoustic range, as well as a grand stage to host the musical.
